Lars Kölby is a professor of Plastic Surgery at The Department of Plastic Surgery, University of Gothenburg. His previous research focus was on neuroendocrine tumour cell biology. Today his research field is craniofacial reconstructive surgery. The research includes systematic evaluation of the results of surgery for craniosynostosis, genetics of craniosynostosis and long-term evaluation of neurocognitive functions and quality of life in patients operated for craniosynostosis. Since a few years, Lars has a fruitful collaboration with Chalmers and the 3D bioprinting lab BBV. The long-term goal is to utilise bioengineering techniques in reconstructive surgery. The collaboration has resulted in the first ever in vivo formation of human cartilage using 3D bioprinting with human chondrocytes and human stem cells.
