Crowly, Catherine (United States)

Catherine “Cate” Crowley, J.D., Ph.D., CCC-SLP is Professor of Practice in the graduate program of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York where she is the founding director of the bilingual/multicultural program focus and of the online Bilingual SLP Extension Institute.  Dr. Crowley’s international work focuses on building capacity so that children with repaired cleft palates receive quality speech therapy services. She has worked with several international cleft organizations, with the bulk of her work as a Smile Train Strategic Partner for speech therapy.

Dr. Crowley provides in-person courses and advanced mentorship worldwide. Online she offers free cleft palate speech therapy courses in Spanish, English, or French and speech therapy materials in many languages including Hausa, Yoruba, Mandarin, and Hindi. All these materials are available for free download at leadersproject.org. Smile Train estimates that in 2017 alone over 4,500 children worldwide benefited from this work by receiving speech therapy from trained providers.

A Fellow of the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association and an experienced attorney, Dr. Crowley has received awards from that association for her international work and for her work in the U.S. for multicultural contributions and for outstanding contributions to the schools. In 2012 she received the Humanitarian Award from the National Council of Ghanaian Associations and in 2018 she received a citation from Ghana’s Ministry of Education for her decade of work.
